Port Elizabeth
With better weather than almost any city in the world, PE’s got that sunny let’s-go-to-the-beach-right-now feel, any day of the week, any time of the year. Friendly, relaxed, it’s the water sport port of south Africa with superlative windsurfing, ocean sailing, fishing and diving, as well as snorkeling in the cape recife coastal reserve, a mere 5 minute drive from the city centre. You could be lucky enough to see the rare cape clawless the otter there too.
.
Grahamstown:
Grahamstown is frontier country, the center of South Africa English-speaking identity, based on the arrival of the 1820 settlers who tired to turn the aloe-strewn, gorge-river, lion-haunted wilderness into farms. Today the national arts festival celebrates the creative energy of the culture they brought in dialogue with indigenous music dance and art.

Free State (open spaces meet free state of mind).
Golden Gate:
Golden Gate National Park is the best place to admire the golden sandstone formations in the Maluti Mountains of the eastern Free State. Cycling, walking, hiking, climbing, horse riding and guided trips to san rock art sites are popular. Here the colours are striking in autumn as the poplars turn russet, and snow dusts the heights. Stay in a guesthouse or hike a trail through one of the beautiful kloofs (gorges) lined with ouhout (old wood) trees. Or visit nearby artist haven clarens, and cherry festival town ficksburg.
Mangaung (Bloemfontein)
The Afrikaners named it for the wildflowers that surrounded a spring. The sothos named it the home of the leopard. Mangaung was the unlikely setting for the African National congress annual conference in the 1950’s, the decisive one when a campaign of passive resistance was chosen. Nelson Mandela began the long walk to imprisonment here.
Gauteng (million-year heritage meets visionary vibe)
